Book Free ConsultationThe vegan food industry in India is growing rapidly with increasing demand for plant-based dairy alternatives, vegan snacks, meat substitutes, and clean-label products. To regulate this emerging sector, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India introduced the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022.
What is Vegan Food as per FSSAI?
According to FSSAI Vegan Food Regulations, vegan food refers to food or food ingredients that are completely free from animal origin components at every stage of production and processing. This includes additives, flavourings, enzymes, carriers, and processing aids.
What 'Vegan' Means Legally:
- No milk or dairy ingredients
- No egg-derived ingredients
- No gelatin or animal enzymes
- No animal-origin processing aids
- No cross-contamination with non-vegan substances
The regulations also specify that vegan foods should not involve animal testing unless specifically required by a regulatory authority.
1. Manufacturing Controls & GMP Compliance
FSSAI requires Food Business Operators (FBOs) to ensure strict segregation between vegan and non-vegan production. If a shared production line is used, it must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before vegan production begins.
- ✓ Physical segregation of vegan inventory
- ✓ Validated cleaning SOPs for shared lines
- ✓ End-to-end traceability of ingredients
2. FSSAI Vegan Logo Approval Process
One of the most important aspects of vegan compliance is obtaining approval for the official FSSAI vegan logo. No product can be marketed as "Vegan" in India without this endorsement.
The FBO must submit an application through the FoSCoS portal with detailed technical documentation.
3. Vegan Food Labelling Requirements
Every approved vegan product must display the specified FSSAI vegan logo. The logo features a green "V" inside a square with a leaf, clearly distinguishing it from the standard vegetarian green dot.
Labels must also comply with FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020, including accurate allergen declarations and ingredient transparency.

Imported vegan products face additional scrutiny. Importers must provide certificates issued by recognized authorities in the exporting country that meet or exceed FSSAI's vegan standards. These products must also be relabelled with the FSSAI vegan logo before sale in India.

Common Challenges for Vegan Brands

- Hidden Ingredients: Processing aids and carriers often have animal origins that are hard to trace.
- Misleading Claims: Using the term "Vegan" without official FSSAI logo endorsement.
